REFURBISHING

Steele and Co. Ltd. can carry out the renewal, repair and refurbishing of existing steel structures (movable bridge, jetty, conveyor etc.). This can be in the form of welding repairs, renewal of corroded items, shot blasting of a finished structure in addition to the application of industrial paints to specification. When dealing with heritage items of a historical nature, care is always taken to retain the original character and look of the original structure and we can advise on new regulations and add extra safety features when necessary. We can also provide the authentic look using modern materials and finishes.

Scherzer Bridges, North Wall, Dublin (2003)
Designed by William Scherzer of Chicago, it was a popular type of movable bridge around 1900. Steel trusses or girders across the navigable channel are supported by, and rigidly connected at their ends to large steel rollers or rockers that have a weight at the rear end to counterbalance the front end. Steele & Co. carried out an extensive structural survey of the bridges and replaced any corroded beams or members to strenghten them. Rusted rivets were replaced by authentic "old style" rivets throughout. The bridge was also restored so that it could open and close again with the aid of a mechanical winch.
