Drawbridge
Project: Bagenalstown Co. Carlow
Client: Waterways Ireland |
|
This
bridge was originally built over 100 years ago but fell into disrepair
in the last few years. The counterweight was damaged and the bridge deck
was destroyed and removed. Steele & Co. built a new deck and counterweight
and winch system which raises and lowers the bridge for passing vessels
on the canal. The counterweight is carefully balanced to maintain an even
weight on the bridge at every point during the lift. Waterways Ireland
not only required the bridge to be functional but also to look the very
same as the original bridge from a heritage point of view.
